Glasses of Wine Tasting Size Pour

Sunset Magazine Wine Competition

Domaines Paul Mas wines have been wowing discerning judges all over the world at professional wine competitions this year. We’re delighted to tell you about some of our winning wines from the Sunset International Wine Competition, a competition sponsored by Sunset Magazine and judged by world-class winemakers, influential wine journalists, top industry educators and Master Sommeliers.

We also took home several medals from this year’s incredible Critics Challenge and at the prestigious Sommelier Challenge International Wine Competition in San Diego, California. Because of this recognition, we have been invited to pour three of our highest scoring wines from that competition at The Vault: Reserve & New Release Tasting in San Diego on November 21st, 2014. Last year Domaines Paul Mas was the Sommelier Challenge’s Winery of the Year, and this year our wines continued to impress the judges, unrivaled in our combination of quality and value. About the only difficult part when it comes to this incredible lineup of award-winning wines is deciding which bottle to open tonight!

2013 Cote Mas Blanc Mediterranee SRP $8.99

French white wine mediterranean blend

This lively blend of grenache blanc, vermentino, chardonnay, and sauvignon blanc won a gold medal at the 2014 Critics Challenge. With aromas of white flowers, peach, and pear, it’s refreshing by itself and great with appetizers and picnic fare. This wine is light, bright, with a briny minerality on the palate that will ferry you to a sunny seaside afternoon in a Mediterranean vineyard, like the one our label depicts. While it can’t compare to actually visiting us in the Languedoc, at $8.99, it’s a trip your taste buds can take any day. Great to drink as a stand-alone sipper, or with salads dressed in light vinaigrette, and with antipasto.

2013 La Forge Estate Chardonnay SRP $14.99

French Chardonnay Domaines Paul Mas

Here is a well-balanced, decadent-tasting Chardonnay, fermented and aged three months in oak barrels. The resulting aromas are tropical fruits, quince and hazelnuts, with a hint of vanilla and bread.  Nice acidity helps to offset the toasty, creamy flavors for a charming, refined mouthfeel. The La Forge Estate Chardonnay was awarded a silver medal in the Sommelier Challenge International Wine Competition. A palate dancer alongside white meat, oily fishes, winter squash, mushroom risotto, and soft cheeses.

2013 Paul Mas Estate Carignan Vielles Vignes SRP: $14.99

Domaines Paul Mas Carignan red wine bottle

This 100% old vine carignane was a superstar at this year’s Sunset International Wine Competition, taking home a Best In Class/Gold Medal award. The wine is an intense deep purple color with ruby red tints. On the nose, blackberries and exotic spices appear first, and then a soft undertone of cocoa and wet earth reveals itself. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with finely-structured tannins. Brambleberry and cassis mingle with anise for a deliciously complex flavor.  The finish is long and toasty, thanks to six months of barrel aging. It’s hard to resist drinking this wine now, but it’s worthy of mention that it will continue to develop for at least five more years in bottle.  At just $14.99, you can buy some now and save some for later. No wonder Sunset Magazine also called it a Best Buy! Drink with burgers, ribs, lamb, or andouille sausage.

2013 Chateau Paul Mas Clos des Mures SRP: $ 24.99

Chateau Paul Mas Clos des Mures 2010 red wine bottle

Another great option when you’re seeking a bold red wine to accompany dinner.  This one is a blend of mostly syrah, with 10% grenache and 5% mourvedre. Many of the vines used in the wine are 40 years old and produce richly extracted flavors and that beautiful deep garnet color. Aromas of blackcurrants and violets develop on the palate along with spiced chocolate and espresso. The wine spent 10 months in oak barrels before release. This bottle took home a gold medal from the Sommelier Challenge International Wine Competition. Drink with Gruyere cheese, veal, or Cassoulet.

Chateau Paul Mas Clos de Savignac SRP $24.99

Domaines Paul Mas Red Wine Bottle Rhone style blend

This wine is a blend of mourvèdre (50%), syrah (30%) and grenache (20%), all sourced from the sea-facing hillside Clos Savignac Cru vineyards at Domaines de Nicole. An inky purple color, this blend smells like stewed blackberries, savory herbs, and burnt caramel. The palate is opulent and fruit driven, accented by a smoky meatiness, supple tannins and a long, creamy finish. This wine was a platinum medal winner at the Sommelier Challenge International Wine Competition and a silver medal winner at the Sunset International Wine Competition. Drink with ham, charcuterie, lamb chops, rich meats cooked with herbs de Provence, and mushroom dishes.
